Most Of The Artists On This Fine Collection Of Records (Made For The King Label In The Early 1950s) Are Now Forgotten Names. The Most Famous Are, Undoubtedly, Sonny Terry & Brownie Mcghee. Brownie's Recordings Are Here Under The Pseudonym Big Tom Collins While Sonny's Harmonica Adds Support To Ralph Willis's Sides. Brownie's Younger Brother Stick Should Really Be The Most Well Known - His Song 'Drinkin' Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee' Is A Widely Recorded American Classic, Covered By Rockabilly, Blues, R&B And Country Stars, Ranging From Champion Jack Dupree To Lightnin' Hopkins, Johnny Burnette To Charlie Daniels, The Electric Flag To Pere Ubu. Yet, As So Often Happens With This End Of The Music Business, Stick Died In 1961 Too Soon To Capitalise On His Greatest Song And The Blues Revival That Was Just Beginning. Ll Of The Music On 'New York Blues' Showcases The So-Called Piedmont Tradition Of The North Carolinas As It's Focus Moved To New York And Adapted To The Raucous, Amplified Sound Of The Post-World War 2 Era. Songs Like 'Gonna Hop On Down The Line' With The Propulsive, Plucked Bass Support Of Gary Mapp (Is This The Same Guy Who Recorded With Thelonius Monk The Year Earlier?), Come Close To The Style Of The Earlier, Countryfied North Carolina Sound But Material Such As 'Jungle Juice' Are Lifted On A Bed Of Urban Riffing Saxes. Champion Jack Dupree Pounds The Piano Barrelhouse Style On 'Real Good Feeling' And Stick Turns In A Couple Of 'Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee' Clones In 'Head Happy With Wine' And 'Six To Eight'. Wonderful, Uncomplicated Music.
