Think Of The R&B Classic Got My Mojo Working And Chances Are That You'll Associate The Song With Muddy Waters. Even The Normally Authoritative Cassell's Dictionary Of Word And Phrase Origins Says That Muddy "Knew What He Was Singing About Because He Had Written The Song Under His Real Name Mckinley Morganfield". So You'd Probably Guess That Muddy's Recording Was The Original. Right? Wrong! The Original Of Mojo Was Recorded In 1957 By Ann Cole On Sol Rabinowitz's New York-Based Baton Records, And It's One Of The Gems To Be Found On The Baton Label - Sol's Story. This Compilation Contains Many Of The Best R&B And Doo Wop Recordings From The Baton Label, Covering The Period 1953-5 8. As Sol Relates In His Own Story In The Notes To The Cd, Ann Cole, Backed By The Suburbans, Recorded Got My Mojo Working Shortly Before Going On A Month Long Tour Through The South With Muddy Waters' Band. Contrary To Sol's Warning, Cole Performed The Song (Actually Written By Preston Foster) On The Tour And Taught It To Muddy's Band. On His Return To Chicago, Muddy Recorded It Himself On The Chess Label Using Lyrics Which Are Slightly Different Because He Couldn't Remember The Original Words! Both Versions Sold Well Nationally. Ann Cole Recorded Many Fine Bluesy R&B Sides For The Label And A Good Selection Of Them Is Included On The Cd, As Is Marie Knight's Sought-After I Thought I Told You Not To Tell Him. As Well As His Female Soloists, Sol Had Many Successes In The Doo Wop Genre With Groups Such As The Rivileers, The Hearts (Whose Line-Up Included Baby Washington For A While) And The Fidelitys, Many Of Whose Best Sides Are Included On This Cd. It's Hard To Believe That The First Record On The Baton Label, One Of Doo Wop's Longest-Standing Classics: A Thousand Stars By The Rivileers, Was Made By Sol In A Session That Cost $250 And He Had Never Even Been Inside A Recording Studio Before! From Such A Low-Key Start, Some Great Recordings Resulted Over The Years And Many Got A Good Deal Of Exposure Through Sol's Friendship With Dj Alan Freed, Then On Radio Station Wins In New York City. So, 28 Of The Best From Baton Are To Be Found Here Along With A Detailed Discography.
