Issue 30. Two coupes have earned cover shots for 30, each with an incredible powerplant. A Tropical Turquoise Deuce motivated with Olds J-2 power will go out to subscribers (the “B” version) while a Sierra Gold '33 Ford and its dual-quad Buick 425 makes a powerful impression on our newsstand “A” issue.
An engrossing piece on the early days of the Sadd, Teague, and Bentley roadster marks an interesting departure from standard TRJ fare. The stylized history of the roadster and the colorful men behind it is a story not to be missed, and the wealth of historical photography that accompanies the feature cannot be missed by any fan of lakes or drag racing.
Ken Gross gives us a look at a lost-and-found Northwest custom. This late-'50s-era 1936 Ford roadster, originally a Dee Wescott creation and a 1959 Hot Rod cover car, has recently been given a full restoration to its show-winning state.
A profile of the American Hot Rod Foundation and an excerpt from Dick Wallen's Roaring Roadsters: The Road to Indy each gave The Rodder's Journal more opportunity to run excellent historic photos. These depictions of early lakes racing and '40s-era circle track competition, respectively, are not to be missed.
Much more makes 30 an issue not to be missed by any hot rod fan. The art of Chris Froggett will leave the reader classifying him as “traditional” and “twisted” at the same time. An East Coast custom painter paying homage to his roots, one man's dream car built, sold, and his again, a look at multi-carb intakes, and two sneak peeks at some recently unearthed cars – do the names “Bill Hines” or “Bill Niekamp” mean anything to you? – round out a diverse issue that appeals to all custom and hot rod enthusiasts.
